Plastic Surgery in Thailand, Sign of a Deeper Problem

Plastic Surgery in Thailand, Sign of a Deeper Problem

The pursuit of beauty is a never-ending race of perfection for that perfect symmetry. And in Thailand where the way you look can mean the difference between a life of poverty and a lap of luxury. Many Thais have put a lot of weight on the way they look. This has given rise to a rich and burgeoning industry with several plastic surgery centers and hospitals sprouting up all over Thailand and especially in the capital of Bangkok.

But is the pursuit of beauty really worth the risk of surgery where most of it is elective and unnecessary other than for the sole purpose of improving one’s bust size or height to boost our self-confidence? Perhaps more people should focus on what is really driving their desire to get work done.

Psychologists around the world agree that the advent of social media is one of the main causes of numerous body image issues afflicting both men and women. Imagine from the moment you’re awake; you’re bombarded with images and videos of perfect bodies and faces touting the latest in beauty and fashion. This takes a huge toll on people already suffering from low self-esteem and would eventually feel pressured to change themselves to better match what society deems as ‘perfection’.

One way of combating this body image problem, especially among the younger generation, is educating them that the human body comes in all shapes and sizes. And there isn’t a ‘one size fits all’ solution for everyone because all our bodies are built differently. And that one should concentrate on living a healthy life and a healthy diet. If you want to spruce up your image, you can change your dress style but don’t risk your body in the pursuit of an impossible image perfection being touted by modern consumerism.
