The Benefits of Exercise

Why you Should Start Exercising

Remember whenever you see the doctor and ask how you can get healthier, they always say diet and exercise? Well, it turns out that doctors have been right all along. Diet and exercise is the best way to keep your body in good health. Regular exercise promotes cell growth in your bones and muscles, which makes you stronger. The immediate benefit of exercise is that the increased blood flow keeps your thinking, learning, and judgment sharp even as you age.

Another benefit is that it helps you guard against weight gain as you age. When we age, our body’s metabolism slows down, and this decrease is exponential. Doctors recommend combining diet and exercise to maintain healthy body weight. Maintaining a healthy weight puts less stress on our bones and joints as well as our organs. Especially the heart because extra body fat can strain your heart muscle which has to work a lot harder to keep blood flowing to all your blood vessels.

Keeping your weight in the healthy range also helps you to avoid heart disease and stroke, which is a common ailments for older folks. Just 150 minutes of physical activity per week is enough to reduce your risk of heart disease. And with even more activity, you can lower your blood pressure and cholesterol levels as well.

Exercise also keeps your body’s balance and agility which allows you to maintain a certain level of flexibility and dexterity, which can help you prevent falls.

Most importantly, exercise will allow you to live longer. Studies have shown that adults 40 and older who exercise regularly tend to live longer overall.

Just like what Olivia Newton-John said, get out there and start getting physical!
