Is Kombucha Good for You?

Kombucha Can Be Healthy

Kombucha

Many people are discovering kombucha. It’s a fermented, slightly fizzy, sweetened drink made from black tea, yeast, bacteria and sugar that’s becoming popular in Thailand. The bacteria and yeast in the drink provide probiotics and are a healthy addition to your diet, as probiotics are healthy bacteria that result in a healthy gut. This is important for your digestion and maintaining a healthy immune system.

Kombucha also provides antioxidants, making it a source of nutrients, along with your consumption of vegetables, fruits, and other plant foods.

Healthy Substitute for Coffee Drinks

Although kombucha is made from black tea, it has very little caffeine, so it’s an alternative drink for those watching their caffeine intake. It also contains some alcohol, so it’s more of a late afternoon drink and less of an early morning worktime drink.

Many people are turning to kombucha to wean themselves off the coffee drinks they find themselves consuming throughout the day. The one thing to watch out for is the sugar content of the kombucha you consume. If you switch to kombucha as an alternative to coffee drinks without reducing the sugar content, you’re just replacing one sugar source with another.

If you’re interested in reducing your sugar intake by getting away from coffee drinks, try to choose a store-bought brand of kombucha with reduced sugar. Store-bought kombucha may be safer as the production process is more closely regulated. Homemade kombucha has also been known to have an excessive growth of bacteria and mold.

By sticking to your reduced sugar kombucha, you’ll have a healthier gut, improve your immune system, reduce your chances of developing diabetes, and may even drop some weight. Try some reduced-sugar kombucha next time you’re thinking about ordering another sugar-filled coffee drink.
